Flat Feet

Flatfoot is a foot condition in which the arch of the foot has either partially or totally dropped or has never developed. While it is common in babies and small children, it can become a problem for them in adulthood if the arch never forms. For adults, the development of flat feet can be brought upon by injury, as a result of pregnancy due to increased elasticity, or obesity. Those who have health concerns such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes may also be at greater risk for developing the condition.

If you suspect that you have flat feet, it is best to consult your podiatrist. Your foot doctor will examine the suspected foot and observe how it looks while you sit and stand. He or she may take an X-ray to determine how serious the condition is. Some common signs of flatfoot include toe drift, in which the toes and front part of the foot point outward, a short Achilles tendon, and a heel that tilts outwardly while the ankle tilts inward.

Once flatfoot has been diagnosed, your podiatrist may suggest one of several treatment options. Flat feet can be rigid, in which the feet appear to have no arch even when the person is not standing; or flexible, in which the person appears to have an arch while not standing, but once standing the arch disappears. Those with flexible flatfoot may be told to reduce any activities that cause pain and to avoid extended periods of walking or standing. Another suggestion may be weight loss, as excessive weight may be placing pressure on the arches

In few cases, if the condition is severe and all other methods have been exhausted surgery may be required. This is normally avoided, however, due to a lengthy recovery time and high cost.

Symptoms of Poor Circulation

A common sign of poor circulation is cold feet. Additionally, some patients feel a numbing or tingling sensation, and may have hair loss on the legs. Poor circulation can cause cracked heels, wounds to heal slower, and toenails may become weakened. This condition may be a symptom of underlying medical conditions, including diabetes, arteriosclerosis, or peripheral artery disease, and specific risk factors may precede these conditions. These can consist of smoking, having high blood pressure or cholesterol, and becoming physically inactive. Research has shown that poor circulation may be improved by having frequent massages, wearing compression socks or stockings, and practicing relaxation techniques. Poor circulation of the feet can cause difficulty in completing daily activities. If you are afflicted with this ailment, please consult a podiatrist for an effective diagnosis and treatment program.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Deborah Rosenfeld of Rosenfeld Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Causes and Effects of Foot Drop

Foot drop is a condition that makes it difficult to lift the foot high enough to clear the ground when you take a step. As a result, people with foot drop may appear to be high-stepping or marching when they walk. It also may cause you to slap your foot down on the ground with each step. In some cases, the top of the foot or the toes may feel numb. Foot drop is not a disease, but is generally caused by a neurological, muscular, or anatomical problem. The symptoms indicate a weakness or paralysis in the muscles that lift the foot. There are a number of underlying conditions, such as muscular dystrophy, that may be at the root of the problem. Foot drop can be a temporary condition, but if it becomes permanent more advanced diagnostic methods may be recommended.  A podiatrist can conduct a number of imaging tests to determine the cause of foot drop. In addition, an ankle foot orthosis may be prescribed to hold the foot in place. Also, electrical nerve stimulation is sometimes helpful. Please consult a podiatrist for more information.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Deborah Rosenfeld from Rosenfeld Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Do You Suffer From Painful Foot Blisters?

Foot blisters usually happen from friction, caused when shoes that are too tight or restrictive are worn and rubbed against the foot. While one can pop a blister and disinfect the area, it is a good idea to leave it alone. In addition, it is suggested you cover blisters with a padded bandage for protection and to prevent further irritation, so the body can reabsorb it. To prevent blisters, wear shoes that fit properly and feel comfortable with socks that provide padding in common areas of blister development. If a foot blister does not heal after the irritant is removed, looks infected, or is extremely painful, it is suggested that a podiatrist be seen for proper evaluation and treatment. Individuals with diabetes should be especially cautious since a blister could turn into a foot ulcer.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact Deborah Rosenfeld of Rosenfeld Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Marlton, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Blisters on the Feet

Blisters are a common ailment of people who wear shoes that are either too tight or rub against the feet in an uncomfortable way. Knowing the basics of blisters is important for understanding how they are formed and what treatments should be used for them.

A blister on the foot, or any other part of the body, is a small pocket that is filled with fluid. It usually forms on the upper layer of the skin because these layers are loose enough to allow a blister to form. The most common fluid in a blister is just a clear, watery-like fluid that usually isn’t cause for concern. However, blisters can fill up with blood if they are deep enough and pus if they have become infected with bacteria.

Blisters almost always form on the feet due to shoes rubbing up against the foot, where the friction causes blisters. These can occur after you have walked for a long period of time or when your shoes do not fit you properly. Your feet are also more prone to blisters if they are moist, so keeping them dry and clean is one preventative step you can take.

Preventing infection should be the number one concern when treating blisters, as well as relieving the pain they can cause. Using a bandage to cover up the blister will help it heal and prevent bacteria from entering it. New skin will form under the blister and eventually cause it to pop. You can also take a sterilized pin and try to pop it yourself.

If the blister is filled with pus or blood, seeking treatment from a doctor is ideal. Antibiotics may need to be taken in order to completely eliminate the bacteria inside the blister. See a doctor to have an antibiotic prescribed.

The best way to treat blisters is to prevent them all together. Keeping your feet dry and making sure that your shoes fit properly are just two of the steps you can take to prevent blisters. Shoes that are too tight or shoes that are too loose and allow your feet to slide in them will cause blisters. Applying a bandage to an area where you think a blister is about to form is another way you can prevent them.

Ankle Stretches

Many different individuals might experience some kind of ankle pain or stiffness at some point in their lives. There are many different causes and types of ankle pain. However, if the ankle is feeling stiff, sore, or painful, gently stretching the ankle may be beneficial for some people. An individual might consider performing ankle circles where, in a seated position with one leg crossed over another, you move the foot off of the ground in a circle. Another potential stretch is known as the towel stretch where a person sits on the ground with their legs stretched out in front of them. Then, the person wraps a towel around the bottom of the feet, and gently and repeatedly pulls the towel toward themselves. Of course, it is always a good idea to consult with a medical professional before performing stretches. Contact a podiatrist today to see if you can mitigate your ankle pain or stiffness by performing any of these stretches.

Wearing High Heels May Cause Morton’s Neuroma

The pain that is associated with the foot condition that is known as Morton’s neuroma is generally found in the ball of the foot. It happens as a result of a compressed or irritated nerve between the third and fourth toes, and it occurs more frequently in women. Wearing high heels may be a common cause for Morton’s neuroma to develop. More often than not, the toes may have limited room to move freely in, and the nerve may become inflamed. Common symptoms of this ailment include a burning sensation in the ball of the foot, and some patients describe the feeling as similar to standing on a marble or pebble. Additionally, the toes may be affected as the pain radiates through the foot, and can be uncomfortable. A proper diagnosis is needed to rule out arthritis or a fracture, and this is accomplished by having an X-ray taken. If you have pain in this part of your foot, a podiatrist can provide you with answers to questions you may have, and guide you toward the treatment that is best for you.

What Is Sinus Tarsi Syndrome?

Pain on the outside of the foot between the ankle and the heel bone is usually caused by a condition known as sinus tarsi syndrome (STS). The sinus tarsi is an area within the hindfoot, between the talus and calcaneus bones, that contains ligaments, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and fat. The pain felt in this area is generally caused by an injury to the ligament, such as a sprained ankle. It becomes a syndrome, however, when it is accompanied by several other factors. Among them are chronic pain felt at the front and side of the ankle, a feeling of instability, and difficulty walking on uneven surfaces (sand, gravel). Swelling, tenderness, and bruising are also present with sinus tarsi syndrome. People with flat feet are more likely to incur STS. It may also be the result of frequent ankle sprains. Ballet dancing, sitting with your feet tucked under you, and pitching baseballs or softballs can cause the syndrome because of repetitive actions. Symptoms of sinus tarsi syndrome generally develop over time. In order to determine whether you may have STS, please consult a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment options.

The Pros and Cons of Wearing Flip Flops

The simplicity of wearing flip flops during the summer months is appealing for many people. They are designed in different colors and styles, and have become a popular shoe. Despite their ease, they lack structural support, and this can affect the ankles, calves, heels, and feet. They are beneficial to wear in public areas where there are swimming pools and locker rooms. They are considered to be an appropriate shoe that may help to prevent athlete’s foot and toenail fungus while worn in these types of areas. Flip flops can be purchased with cushioned soles, and leather material. Additionally, it is beneficial to choose these types of shoes that have a strap in the back, which can be helpful in keeping the shoe on the foot. When the wrong type of flips flops are worn, the gait may gradually be affected, and pain may be felt in the feet. If you would like more information about the pros and cons of wearing flip flops, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Deborah Rosenfeld from Rosenfeld Podiatry. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Marlton, NJ .  We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Flip Flops and Feet

Flip flops are often a popular choice of footwear for many people. Flip flops allow your feet to breathe and give your toes the freedom of movement. They are easy to slip on and can be worn with virtually any style of clothing. Flip flops, however, despite their many benefits, can be detrimental for your foot health.

Despite their comfortableness, frequently wearing flip flops can create problems in the lower body over time. Issues mainly stem from the fact that people walk differently in flip flops compared to other footwear, such as sneakers. This is due to a change in one’s natural gait, which therefore creates stress in different parts of the body while hindering the body’s natural posture. Problems can also arise in the arches and balls of the feet. Flip flops provide little to no support to these areas.

Aside from long-term problems, flip-fops can also create short-term issues as well, such as ankle sprains and blisters. Weak materials that are flexible and bendable are generally used to manufacture flip flops. These materials make its wearers prone to both tripping and injuring their ankles. Flip flops can create blisters as the material rubs against the foot. People are much more at risk for infection while wearing flip flops due to their openness. This also makes it easier to scrape and cut the foot since there is a lack of protection. If these cuts are left untreated and uncovered, the risk then becomes greater.

To prevent the aforementioned occurrences, purchase a pair of flip flops that offer significant protection. The soles of the flip flops should not be floppy, but sturdy and firm, and should not significantly bend or wiggle when lifted from the floor. Flip flops made of high-quality materials will not be affected by this problem. While higher quality flip flops may be more expensive, they will last longer and provide better protection compared to a cheaper pair. Brand name flip flops sold from a quality manufacturer are a dependable option.

There is no problem in wearing your favorite pair of flip flops so as long as you do not wear them daily or for extended periods of time. Flip flops should be replaced every 3-4 months to ensure that they provide your feet with the best protection.
